Thursday 3rd February 2005

This week  at SHORTFUSE - London's best and only weekly fusion of stand up poetry, performance comedy and music - we are pleased to present a London debut for the Vancouver Poetry Slam team: #1 ranked spoken word artists in Canada, and recently placed first in Canada at the Spoken Wordlympics 2004.

Barbara Adler: The author of three books, Barbara has performed all over North America, including regular stops at the US National Slam and as a notable feature performer at NYC's Bowery Poetry Club.

Brendan McLeod: Brendan was the 2004 winner of the National Individual Final at the Canadian Spoken Wordlympics. He currently performs as the singer/songwriter of the Vancouver funk band, New Foundation. Excerpts from his first novel were published in the journal Sophia in May 2001. He received his MA in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo in 2002.

C. R. Avery: C.R. can, among other things, play harmonica while beat-boxing and rapping at the same time. The author of three hip hop operas, he has toured all across Europe and North America as a musician and spoken word artist.

PLUS: Polly Atkin - a great new talent on the London scene, a sensual poetic exploration into the darker reached of the imagination, barbed with bright humour.

What can we say? If you weren't there you missed something very special. First up, after Nathan plugged in (it was like when Dylan went electric), was Polly Atkin with some insightful poems coupled with a relaxed and confident peformance. We gave over the whole second half to the poets from Vancouver - an incredible mix of poetry, spokenword, song and harmonica/beatbox. Hopefully we'll be lucky enough to get them back again...otherwise you'll have to travel to Canada, trust us, it'll be worth it.
